So, you’re ready to contact your senior photographer, get your photos taken, and finally graduate. This is an exciting time to be alive, and I’m here for all of it! However, a lot of my seniors come to me worried, not knowing what to do during the session, or how to dress for it! I got you! Here’s my top five tips for preparing for taking your senior or graduation photos!

Planning Your Outfits and Accessories

First, ladies, take care when picking out your outfits. Grab several of them! Start with one that’s casual. Then, pick out one that’s dressy. Maybe you should even grab something that would look good in your LinkedIn profile headshot, since you’re graduating soon! However, whatever it is you’re selecting, wear something that makes you “you.” Make sure what you pick is flattering, comfortable, and appropriate to the time of year! Also, any jewelry you wear needs to be “you” as well! If you normally keep it simple, keep it simple. If you always wear a ton of bracelets, then wear a ton of bracelets for our shoot!

Hair and Makeup Preparation

Professional hair and makeup is always recommended, because it just photographs better. But, it’s not required. However, there’s recently quite a few online makeup tutorials, so most people nowadays are hair and makeup artists on their own!

Make no mistake, though! Getting your hair and makeup professionally done will always be preferred. When you get someone who actually knows exactly what they’re doing, they not only style you, but they also style you in such a way that the work they do stays up and on for long periods of time. This is not always the case when you do it yourself!

Treating Your Skin Well

Prepping your skin is always a good idea. For a week or two before your senior photography session, it’s not a good idea to start any new products. And, when self tanning, simply do not experiment with a new tanner the day before the session. One thing you can do is drink plenty of water for a few days leading up to the session! This will help your skin look naturally glowy!

Bringing All the Props!

I absolutely love it when my clients bring props, books, or whatever. Just make sure to let your senior photographer know beforehand so he or she can plan, though! Additionally, let your senior photographer know if you’re bringing friends or pets to the session. It just helps us plan in advance.

Let Your Senior Photographer Do the Work for You

Lastly, and most importantly, come to your session excited and ready to have fun! Don’t come to me nervous! Your photographer will tell you exactly what they want you to do with your hands. I’ll even relax you and tell you how to sit and how to stand. You do not have to be a professional. That should be the least of your worries!
